I am primarily a woodturning artist, living in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada.
I was born in northern Manitoba and raised in northern Saskatchewan. While living up north, I learned to make moccasins, mukluks, et al from the local First Nations people. After moving to Alberta, I was introduced to the wood lathe. While I still do some leatherwork, my primary medium is now wood. The woods I use are most often reclaimed and/or indigenous to Canada (maple, birch, walnut, poplar, Saskatoon berry).
My love of wood turning is fuelled by the seemingly endless opportunities to fuse together different technologies, mediums and embellishing techniques. My goal with most pieces is to create a form that is pleasing to look at and inspires the question: “How did you do that?” Occasionally, I shift my intent and aim to create a form that demands to be picked up, caressed, admired for the beautiful wood, and enjoyed for its functionality. Sometimes I make things simply for the artistic challenge.
