Maia Stark

Maia Stark is a Saskatoon-based artist of settler ancestry, working on Treaty 6 Territory. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Saskatchewan (2015). Her practice is rooted in an ongoing exploration of body politics, which began during her BFA and continued through her MFA. This research evolved into a focus on the Grotesque and the Uncanny, particularly as they appear in folktales and fairytales.

Stark draws on personal memory and her Icelandic, Irish, and Scottish heritage to create evocative imagery in painting, drawing, and ceramics. Her work often features duplicated figures—self-portraits that reflect her experience as an identical twin—using this doubling to explore narrative, identity, and myth.
