Everything about painting thrills me…… I add and subtract, scratch and scrape with a mix of media….mostly oil, encaustic, charcoal, oil stick and collage. I am seduced by expressive marks, texture and colour and I love to layer.
During the painting process, I strive to mimic a history, establish a mood and relay a sense of mystery within a given space. Capturing emotions from a place, a time of day, or some fragment of nature is central to my work as is the constant search for light. I favour oils for their rich hues and buttery texture and encaustic for its luminous quality and inherent ability to preserve and obscure. Encaustic also allows me to encapsulate organic matter and found objects under multiple layers and then scrape into these layers in order to expose what lies below….. it is an excavation process I enjoy immensely.
I work with a variety of subject matters and I love them all equally. In the end, it’s all about pushing paint around and taking the viewer to a different, higher place.
