Astri Prugger is a Montreal fashion designer known for her elegant custom-designed apparel, accessories, and jewellery. She studied fashion design for three year at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario, graduating in 1984 and opening her first boutique the same year. Specializing in wedding and evening gowns, her creations have danced the night away at Montreal society events including the Viennese Ball, Museum Ball, Saint Andrew’s Ball and Daffodil Ball. In 2014 she had the exciting experience of creating the dress that singer-songwriter Jennifer Gasoi wore when she received the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Artist. She has also made dresses for many Montreal personalities including philanthropist Maria Guzzo, singer Nicki Yanofsky, and Saskatchewan’s own Connie Kaldor. Astri’s designs are executed from sketch, to original pattern, to cotton muslin, to the completion of each unique piece. Hand-finishing and haute-couture detailing are emphasized. Astri’s love of colour, texture, and quality are evident in everything she creates. Her clothing is distinctive in its simplicity and classic elegance. Astri has wide ranging interests in other art forms and media. She has studied jewellery making and watercolour painting at Montreal’s Visual Art Centre, diary painting on cloth with Susan Shie at Maiwa in Vancouver, and has recently participated in a life-changing photography workshop with famed photographer Freeman Patterson in New Brunswick. She brings everything she learns in her artistic pursuits to her work as a fashion designer. In November 2015 she had the pleasure of returning to her hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, as an invited judge at the Saskatchewan Wearable Art Gala. She can’t wait to participate in the EMMA Collaboration!
